Goodbye, Vanilla Diet Coke!

The year is quickly coming to an end, so what the heck, I thought I would live it up.

My favorite drink ever is/was Vanilla Diet Coke.  It was like a religion to me.  It pulsed through my veins, or at least I wish it did.  About a year or so ago, they discontinued this palatal masterpiece.  I, along with a few others (Marcia), were devastated.  Coke has since come about with Diet Coke Vanilla Zero and other impostor drinks, but none have been the same.

I bought refrigerator cases by the truckload, but when I realized that Coke had attempted to crush my caffeine addiction by discontinuing my heavenly nectar, I saved one, last, eternal refrigerator case.  Today, that case is over a year old!

For some time I lived in denial.  I would open the food storage door and the first thing I would see is that lonely, beautiful, full, Diet Vanilla Coke refrigerator case just smiling back at me.  And who can resist that smile!  I never dared open the case because that would succumb myself to the reality that Diet Vanilla Coke was really gone, never to return.  I just didn't know how I could go on harboring that knowledge.

But I woke up today, and I knew that today, the last day of 2007, was different.

I opened the box.

I guess I can move on.  There are other soft drinks out there.  I will find another...  never a replacement.

So, I opened the first can in the box.  I took a sip.

It had gone bad.  BLEH!

The rest went in the garbage.

I guess the transition won't be so hard after all!

I Love Sundays!

O.K.  At the risk of sounding cheesy, I would like to say that I LOVE SUNDAYS!  They are becoming more and more sacred to me.  And not just on a spiritual level.  I do enjoy going to church (much more now that I am in the Primary) and being uplifted, but I also treasure the utter day of rest.  At our house, Sunday is rolling out of bed around 9 (or whenever the boys are done fending for themselves and really need some breakfast), hanging out all morning in our jammies reading and playing games, getting ready for church and barely making it on time, coming home and eating dinner together, and then repeating some of the morning activities.  The rest of the week gets so busy with Matt working and the kids' activities, that on Sunday it is so nice to just hang out and relax.

Luckily for us Alex has learned the art of relaxing and loves to read.  Isaac, on the other hand, well, he's Isaac.  He rides his scooter around the house, plays with his toys, runs outside to eat some snow, colors for a minute, and then he wants someone to play with him.  It is a good thing though, otherwise I'd probably sink into some level of unconsciousness never to return... until Monday.

MVB (Most Valuable Baker)

If one were to make a list of the most valuable people in one's life, I think most of us would share a similar list.  Spouse, Kids, family members, friends, etc. . .

In my life,  there are two people that have been through everything with me.  They have known me the longest.  They are those with whom I have the most history.  They have put up with me in both my good and bad days.  And believe me, there were some pretty bad days!  Yet they stood by me then and continue to stand by me to this day.  They are my mom and dad.

Yesterday, was my dad's birthday.  He turned sixty-freaking-nine!  Do people still get to be that old?  We celebrated by going to Isaac's favorite restaurant (Grandpa Joe is a pushover with the grandkids), The Chinese Gourmet.  Above is a picture of that event.
In honor of my dad, I thought I would post a couple of my favorite memories:

First, I played baseball all throughout my youth.  As a father, I know how difficult it can be to put aside quality time to spend with my kids.  My dad took hours, every day, to play catch, pitch balls to me, be my catcher when I pitched (sorry), and be my coach and biggest fan all at the same time.  Those were some of the best times of my life.  After every strikeout or home run, it brought me so much joy to hear my dad screaming over all the other fans.  Thanks, dad.

My dad taught at BYU all through the years.  With that, came an unwavering support for BYU sports.  I treasure all the football and basketball games we attended together.  Cheering, cussing, laughing, crying, side-by-side, bonded us in such a way that I will treasure forever.  I look forward to continue this tradition with my kids.

For those of you who know me, I am the antithesis of handy.  But fortunately, I have access to the worlds best handyman.  My dad can fix anything!  If he can't fix it, he will rig it so that it will miraculously work!  He cuts lawns, fixes or assembles anything one asks him to fix or assemble, and does everything else happily and without grudge.  When I have a project to complete, I can always ask my dad for help and he will clear his schedule and devote all his time to me.

Lastly, he is not only the world's greatest dad, but he is even a better grandpa.  My boys love their grandpa Joe.  When I see grandpa spending quality time and playing with my boys, I love my dad even more.  And there is no question, how much my boys love their grandpa.  My dad is my boys' hero.

And he's mine too.

Happy Birthday, Dad!

The Day After...

Happy Day After Christmas!  Thank goodness it is over.

The Chaos.  The Emotion.  The Shopping.  Why do we subject ourselves to this?  I am convinced that every couple has their pre-Christmas fight.  Come on, admit it... you had yours.

BUT...  Then somehow, in the eternal words of Austin Collie, "Magic Happens."  It all comes together.

Everything went well for us this Christmas for the most part.  Our pulses did rise a couple of times, however.  Like when Isaac told us that he had secretly told Santa that he wanted a "Green Lantern" action figure on Christmas Eve and  he was so excited to get it.  Or when Alex delivered one of our secret twelve days of Christmas gifts which was homemade rolls and jam, only to find out that Alex had dropped the glass jam jar, watched it shatter, carefully tried to reassemble the glass fragments, and then faithfully delivered the shard-infested jam.  "Don't worry," he said, "I got all the glass out."

Thank goodness he got ALL the glass out.  Enjoy the jam!

But that was about it.  I was able to enjoy the fruits of my wife's shopping labors and watch the kids frolic in the present mayhem.

And when Isaac gleefully proclaimed, "This is the best day of my whole life!"  Well, things were pretty good.  I guess that is why we do it...

Merry Christmas and Happy Blogger Birthday

I can see the head.  Here they come.  PUSH  PUSH

TWINS

What a mess...

Matt and Jenny (The Baker Bloggers) were blogger born on December 25th, 2007 weighing in at a very uncomfortable weight we wish not to disclose, ever.  Many of you birthed us because of your blogs where we frequently lurked in the dark shadows, coveting your creativity and spunk and wishing we could be as popular as you.  So here it goes.  We are tired of wishing.  We quickly slid down the bloggerspot birthing canal, thus officially making our grand entrance into the blogger world.  We will see how long we survive.

So, stay tuned.  We will hopefully post often and leave profound, inspiring, and amazing thoughts that will brighten, enlighten, and ....

OK. whatever.

Check back soon.

Matt
