I am also pleased to announce my experience as a BYU fan visiting Rice Eccles was also better then anticipated.
This is my report:
--Of the 8 Utah fans in my immediate vicinity, only 2 were TOTALLY wasted.
--I only heard the "F" Bomb sixteen times.
--I only heard "F" BYU twice.
--Only four times was the "F" Bomb directed at me personally.
--I only saw the whole west stadium give Austin Collie "The Bird" six times (who, btw, is unstoppable--the only highlight of the game).
--I was only hit in the head with a blunt object four times.
--I was only threatened with physical violence twice.
--I only felt high from the pot smoking once (that one was worth it).
--I only saw two ladies get hit by their drunk husbands, after which the men received several pats on the back from other men saying "Way to keep her in her place."
--Several times I heard Utah woman fans singing "Utah man am I" Someone please explain that one too me.
--I heard NO ONE sing the whole Yewt Fight Song from start to finish.
--Only one rabid Utah fan put his cigarette out on my arm. It will heal, I am confident.
Totally a place I would like to bring me kids. You should be proud, Yewts!
So, with all that being said, congrats Yewts on being a terrific football team far superior to my Cougs this year and I hope you take the BCS!
Fans... You still blow!
See you next year! Do you Yewts have ANYONE coming back? Because we have EVERYONE coming back...
This is my report!
This is what makes people hate BYU. The smug holier-than-thou approach zoobies have towards others. You had the balls to wear the opposing teams jersey at the stadium, you ought to man-up to the consequences. If you are at OSU wearing a Michigan jersey, you wouldn't have made it out alive!
I've had friends with similar experiences at the Ed. Hit in the head by objects, and yes even get flipped off. I know you can't believe a mormon would do that Baker, but I'm going flip you off the next time I see you to prove it happens! I got news for you too buddy, some zoobies even drink! They just get loaded before the game!!!!
You go to any stadium in the country and you will find great fans, and you will find idiot fans, BYU's stadiums included.
And beyond all of this, who where the least classy players on the field? I only remember one unsportsman-like conduct penalty and that was from your leader on the field. I tell you what, Max Hall was OUR MVP. I've never seen a bigger meltdown in all my life. I'm actually glad you get him back! We need him next year too!
So please, for the rest of us, keep your fake naïveté and over-inflated sense of self-rightness down south in Provo. The real world has no interest in it.
DUDE!
WOW! First of all, I wrote this post hoping it would be funny and I was just joking about a lot of those comments (of course), but you seem to have taken this to a whole new level so I will totally respond.
Your only justification for the YEWTS ridiculous behavior is that other people do it? Nice... Well, I hate hearing YEWT fans talk about how "bad" BYU fans are in order to make themselves feel better about their asinine behavior. I have NEVER heard an "F" Bomb from a Cougar at a game. I have NEVER seen someone flip someone off. I have never seen a drunk cougar fan at a game. And Kelly, as you know, I have been going to games my whole life! I have never been worried about intoxicated fans getting out of control. If such things did happen down south, it is extremely rare and the student would be dismissed from the university and the Cougar fans would be THE FIRST to reprove the out of line Cougar.
In fact, I remember when I was young and I was sitting at a football game and I yelled "Bull-&$*&" after a bad call. I thought the Cougar fans around me would have me lynched. I was immediately put in my place. I never made that mistake again.
Oh, but your "Friends" have had it happen at Ed, eh? Stories from stories? Anything ever happen to you? Anything that isn't hearsay? Ask ANY Cougar at the game yesterday and let them tell you the stories! Ask them what they heard regardless of where they were sitting! It is easy to make stuff up and have it filter down from friend to friend, once again, to JUSTIFY stupid behavior.
Cougar fans may get rowdy and obnoxious. They may say "YEWTS SUCK" and other fan-based chants. They may even throw some ice and smack a Yewt in the head, but Kelly, I heard "F" JOSEPH SMITH and "F" MORMONS and "F" BYU A LOT FROM ENTIRE SECTIONS! You would never hear that, EVER, from a Cougar and you are the "naive" one if you think any different. These chants were coming from ENTIRE SECTIONS and the "Good" Yewt Mormons were doing nothing to stop this. This would NEVER HAPPEN in Provo to say, Notre Dame, and you KNOW IT.
There is a difference between being a fan, having fun, and teasing and taunting for the sports sake, but when the whole student section is telling Mormons to "F" off which I heard with my own ears, THANK GOODNESS I don't group myself with them, and if I did, it would sure be time for some self-evaluation! Go ahead, call this self-righteousness or holier-than-thou or whatever lame thing you can come up with... I call it standing for something and NOT speaking out of both sides of my mouth.
As far as the Hall cheap shot, You are right. The Yewts were far and away the better team. They handled the Cougs. I was very impressed! But the fans were beyond disgraceful and I don't care what happens anywhere else. If Alex were there with me, I WOULD HAVE LEFT, and you know what? If you were there with your kids, you would have left with me. You wouldn't have to worry about that in Provo. PERIOD.
And finally, this "For the rest of us" comment, don't pretend or project that you are somehow in the majority, because if your response is truly a representation of your feelings and views, then I happily separate myself from your make-believe "real" world, and most of my blogger readers will be right behind me!
Read this blog from a friend of mine about his experience.

Dear Mr. Kelly David,
Wow, you seem to be so easily offended by an obvious joke! I AM a U of U ALUMNI, and a U of U FAN all the way - my blood truly runs RED. HOWEVER, I have to agree with Matt regarding the fans, and it has nothing to do with a "holier than thou" attitude, it is just the way it is. True, all fans can be annoying, but bringing RELIGION into the mix is totally unjustified and I would dare say that you know that as well. When fans are at a sports game they should keep it about sports. Lowering oneself to bring religion into the equation is just plain bigoted and I'm positive you would agree. It may come as a surprise to some, but there are actually people at BYU that are NOT Mormons - Surpried?! And there are also U of U fans and students that ARE Mormon - Surprised?! Seriously, your first statement, "this is what makes people hate..." Well, I'm glad that you are the first one to admit that you and others hate a certain people. Hating an entire school for the actions of some is quite a narrow minded way of thinking. Even though Matt, and many others, are BYU fans, he still was mature enough to admit that the U owned BYU and offered his congrats. His comments were directed towards the FANS and not the entire school. This is not, as you put it, "smug and holier-than-thou," attitude, he is merely stating his experience at the game. As I said in the begining, I am a U of U FAN and and have been to the games and I think we both know the facts. However, thanks for your perspective and insight, I'm sure you mean well. Take care.
Listen peeps, I completely agree that bringing religion into the equation is out of line, but that was not in the original post. That came out in the follow up, which is interesting to me.
If that did happen, and I was there, I wouldn't have just left, I would have said something to them or to the ushers and had THEM leave. Guarantee in ANY stadium that would have been deemed unacceptable and many would have backed me up. As Mr/Ms Anonymous (which is weird, just own your comments por favor) states there are LDS fans for both teams. In fact I would venture a guess that most people in that stadium were LDS. If such hatred is being thrown to and fro with such ease, maybe you should have stood your ground and called the ushers over to point out the bad apples. People would have backed you up.
As for my first statement, it was not defending the fans actions by stating "Coug fans do it too", but to simply say this would happen in ANY STADIUM, especially when it is one of the biggest rivalries in the country (thus my equating to Mich., OSU).
I don't condone what they did or said, I simply think you knew where you were and what you were wearing. Man-up, own it. I would have said something to you as well, not as colorful as they did, but you would have known I didn't like what you were wearing. I think the same would have happened at Cougar stadium. Again, not as colorful, but it still would have happened. When you enter the stadium in the opposing teams garb, you have to expect some crap.
Bakes, you talk about stories from stories. I have been to far MORE Utah games than you, and I can attest that I have never seen nor heard the type of behavior that you speak of. As I stated, in ANY stadium you will find good fans and you will find bad fans. That goes for the Utes AND the Cougars.
But main problem with your post (and this quarrel between me and you (did I get that right?) is not new), is the over-reaching, all-encompassing, vast statement:
"Fans... You still blow!"
Those catch all statements. You seem to throw those bad boys around and those are what fire me up. You know that. In my response to you, you very well noticed that I did the same thing!!! And it fired you up as well!
Finally, Mr/Ms Anonymous, I apologize for using the word hate. I should have used the term "really dislike". I never mentioned that I personally hated them, so let's be clear on that.
You talk extensively about the religious aspect of this, but if you re-read the post, there is not one comment on religion. That all came up AFTER my response, so please don't mix that up.
You also talk that Matt's point is directed at the "fans" and not the whole school, what does that mean? He loves the Union building, but not the students inside? Or he thinks the students and faculty that root for U the in athletics blow, but those who are apathetic towards sports he is OK with? I'm a fan. You claim to be a fan. He directed his comments at "fans". A group you and I both fall into. I know this post was put up with fun in mind. I know Matt is thoroughly enjoying this debate, why do you think I responded? To tell him I'm not going to be his friend anymore for his comments? To tell him we can no longer hang out because he doesn't like the school itself? Matt and I have had many discussions like this, one left our wives with their mouths agape. But we made it through. And damn it, we'll make it through this (sorry, I learned that word on campus).
As for any other of Matt's cronies out there, bring it. Let's rip this blog a new one. I'm ready, and stand firm in may "intense dislike" of stereotyping.
With love,
Kelly "the Fan" David
wait. You guys are still coming over on New Year's Eve, right?
I mean, this is just a spat?
LMAO!!!!!!!!!!
Dude, I am rolling right now.
OK.
I would have loved to see you go talk to the pimply-faced usher to get the "bad apples" removed. Listen, there weren't bad "apples," there were ENTIRE ORCHARDS! I would have loved to see the mass exodus of exiled students led by Kelly "THE FAN-atic" David. To see the whole east bleachers removed would have been awesome! I repeat, there were entire sections of students/fans chanting, not just one or two bad seeds. Whether you believe it or not, it was happening. I heard it with my own years. You go get 'em Kelly. Kick 'em all out!!! LOL!
I knew exactly what I was getting into before I left! I love this stuff as you know! You will also see from my original post that "I am also pleased to announce my experience as a BYU fan visiting Rice Eccles was also better then anticipated." I don't need to "man up." I had a blast! But the "F" word comments (NON-Religious based) and Religious slander went too far. When's the last time you went to a BYU/Utah football game? You say you never heard it before? It was everywhere! You are color blind... perhaps a little deaf asswell? ;)
DUDE! When are you going to learn I say things like "Fans... you still blow!" JUST to be funny and tease and get people riled up! OF COURSE I don't think ALL fans are awful! Come on, that is all in fun! It's the rivalry! I made a comment to someone today that said "Like YEWTS go to church!" Dude, I am teashing.
I do think, however, the 'worst' Utah fans compared to the 'worst' BYU fans don't compare... Those YEWT fans blow! Better? You would never here or experience as vile things at Ed. Period. And I would never have taken my son to that game yesterday. Period. And because you know Alex, that is very unfortunate.
Finally, my first post, again, was all in fun... No on put a cigarette out on my arm in case you were really worried! You took it to the next level by going all crazy! It looked like a fun bus so I decided to buy a ticket! Thanks for the great time! Hopefully some more YEWT fans will buy a ticket and maybe get this bus hot-boxing asswell!
P.S.
My favorite part of your post is
"I'm ready, and stand firm in may "intense dislike" of stereotyping."
You should add at the end of that sentence...
"...for which I am also totally guilty!" ;)
wow, i just re-read my last post. a lot of spelling errors... you are just going to have to power through it!
WOW- don't think I am going to touch this one- obviously you have plenty of comments to deal with!
I am just proud of the RED- Go YEWTS!
Heather, you are definately one of THOSE Yewt fans about whom I speak!! ;)
And ya Love me in spite of it :)
I am glad to know you take me at face value- what you see is what you get.
And even though you love the "Y"- I won't let it effect what I think of you!
Matt, I get the feeling that you feel the same way about Ute fans as you do about Democrats. :)
this had nothing to do with the debate going on. I just want to say that I like the little pregnant lady count down on the side of the blog. This is much more enjoyable to watch than that kind of weird looking one of baby in utero floating around that some people have. No offense to those people, just want to say I like your taste better:)
I had a similar experience at the Jazz Bulls game, but I was only chearing for one Bull and the full Jazz. I figure since I lived in Chicago during 3-peat I can chear for the Bulls, but I almost got my butt kicked when the Bulls won. Also, your post was very funny! But the comment debate was more entertaining.
