FHE Rocks!

We had an awesome Monday night! Our good friends, the Sansoms, joined us for dinner and FHE.
Rewind...
The Sansoms like the UofU. I know, nobody is perfect.
We made a bet during football season that whichever team won, the losing fan would learn the opposing University Fight Song and sing it in a public forum. Kelly lost along with his Utes!
Kelly made good tonight on our bet! Check it out!
We also had a lesson, ate some amazing food prepared by Jenny, and finished off the night playing Rock Band! We thought we would share our first music video with all of you!

I would like to bear my testimony...

This post isn't what you think.

I am large
It has been a while since I have been to the gym or paid any attention to eating right. So this week, Monday to be exact, I decided that I would fix those two dilemmas. Who knows how long this resolution will last, but I get points for trying, right?

I have been running everyday this week and I feel so much better. Sure, I ache and my body has gone into workout shock, but I can feel progression ever so slowly.

And as far as eating? I have the best cook as a wife EVER! She has fallen in love with the website www.allrecipes.com and she hasbeen cooking up a storm. Not just cooking mind you, but creating some of the most amazing meals I have EVER tasted. She loves to cook it and I love to eat it! We make a great team.

Not only is her cooking wonderful, she has been going out of her way to make healthy stuff too. If I can eat meals that taste as good as what she has made and they not make me look like a whale, I imagine this is what the Celestial Kingdom will be like.

I would like to bear my testimony that Healthy+Delicious=Feel Good! Try it out! (thanks Kelly Anne for putting us onto that site!)

Here are a couple of links to recipes Jenny has made for our last three meals.

http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Almond-Lemon-Chicken/Detail.aspx

I didn't eat the creamy sauce, but they were glorious even without!

Out of the Mouth of Babes...

You know how once in a while you're at a total loss for words? It doesn't often happen to me because I am training to be a professional talker (well, almost). I do love to talk.
So on Sunday I got all frustrated with Isaac and I told him to shut up. I don't normally say this to my kids, so once I calmed down I felt really bad. I called Isaac over to me and told him I was sorry I was grumpy to him. To my confession he replied "That's OK mom, you just had Satan inside of you". I was shocked and told him I did NOT have Satan inside of me. He then said "Mom, when you do bad things of course you have Satan in you. Who else would be in there?" What do you say to that? Speechless.

EVIL

You may not have any idea what you are looking at. I don't know what the real name of this dessert is, I only know it is EVIL. No really, I mean it; carmel, chocolate, oatmeal, butter, sugar EVIL. You can be watching TV or reading a book, minding your own business, and it calls to you.
There is no point trying to ignore it, the EVIL will continue to call to you until you create it and consume it. Then it will sit in your gut and taunt you for hours. From there it moves directly to the area of your body you least need the added mass (i.e. your behind).
I first discovered this recipe 4 years ago when my sister-in-law Tori made it for us. It has since become a staple in our home. Nearly every Sunday we heed it's demonic call and create another batch. We then devour it, vowing afterward we will never eat again...until the next time it calls.

Evil Carmel Deliciousness

2 sticks butter
1 1/2 cups flour
1 1/2 cups brown sugar
1 1/2 cups oats
1/3 tsp baking soda

caramels
chocolate chips

Mix ingredients together (except caramels and chocolate chips) and spread half into a 9x13 baking dish. Bake for 12 minutes at 350 degrees. Meanwhile, melt one 11 oz. bag of caramels (the little caramel bits work best because you don't have to unwrap them) in a saucepan with 7 1/2 tablespoons of milk. When the oatmeal mixture is done baking, remove from oven and cover with chocolate chips until oatmeal is fairly covered. Then pour melted caramel over the chocolate chips. Top with remaining oatmeal mixture and bake for an additional 10 minutes.
Let cool for 10-15 minutes. Serve warm with ice cream (ice cream is not optional, this dessert is way too rich without it!).

Into the Lion's Den...

2 years in a row...

GLORY!!!

This year was quite different than last year however. Last year we slayed the lions in the den with no trouble whatsoever. BYU blew Utah away. This year, the Utes just about administered a Sigmond and Freud!

But they didn't! And now I can't wait to rub it in to all my fair-weathered, Utah fan friends!

6 of us ventured to Salt Lake City, dressed in blue, painted faces, crazy blue hair, ready to engage in battle. I cautioned Alex that if defeated, we would stay till the very end and take our whoopin' like men! But fortunately, Alex has never had to experience a whoopin' from the Utes! As of recent, we just keep beating them! And after the years of despair from Utah victories as a devoted Cougar fan, I am living it up!

I know the tide will turn again! Utah will take back over the victory verbal hazing, but there is one thing for sure... I am going to enjoy the ride while I can!

GO COUGARS! 55-52 BYU VICTORY IN THE HUNTSMAN CENTER!

Moments...

Once in a while motherhood gives you a moment. It's usually unexpected and for that moment everything you do, day in and day out, is worth it. It could be the first time your toddler brings you a flower (from your flowerbed) clutched in his dirty little fist, it could be an impromptu "I love you" from a child who is "way too old" to be lovey to his mom, it could be watching your baby sleep after a rough day. When you are a mom you need these moments, you live for them. Today, after an exhausting day with my kids, I put them to bed and went downstairs to be by myself for a minute. When I came back up to kiss them goodnight, this is what I saw... Thank heaven for these moments; it's all worth it.

The Haunted Chocolate Ice Cream!

So, after Isaac's friends arrived at his birthday party, we informed them all that they were about to become movie stars! They were, of course, very excited! We filmed for about 15 minutes and one hour after that, this was the DVD they were all able to add to their resumes' (production was on a VERY tight schedules as moms were coming to pick up the actors).

Check out Isaac and his movie star friends! (The video is about five minutes long)

More about the party to come . . .

THE SNAKE!

Our love for Alaska and river rafting continues to this day.

Every year since we returned from Alaska, we, along with quite a riotous bunch (you know who you are!), venture to a small town outside of Jackson, Wyoming to run the Snake River for several days in July.

It is a BLAST! We run the fast, white-water river every day for three or four days and we have the time of our lives. Not to mention the fun we have with the 50+ friends that come along as well. There is always room for more!

This year, because of some family coming from Indiana, we are probably going to be running the week of the fourth of July. So, if you are a friend of ours, please clear your schedule because we promise you will have a better time on the Snake River celebrating our country's birthday than you could have where you live! Watch the video and you will see what we mean!

ALASKA!

When Jenny and I were married, we decided we wanted our lives to contain a certain element of adventure. So, in order to quench this spirit of wanderlust, we decided we would move to Alaska for a Summer while I attended BYU.
What an adventure...

Jenny and I worked in the small town of Denali, just outside Denali National Park. It is in this park where Mt. McKinley (Denali) can be found. Denali is located about 4 hours north of Anchorage and 2 hours south of Fairbanks. Jenny worked as a receptionist in the Denali Hotel and I became a white-water river guide for McKinley Raft.

This experience, besides our marriage and the birth of our children, was truly the best thing we have ever done. We learned to appreciate some of the finer things like running water and electricity because our shack had neither. We lived in a broken down shed where the only way we kept warm was each other and our gas stove.

Today, the legacy of rafting continues... Stay tuned to the next post!

Dadatron VS. Alexhyde & Isaacusprime

So, maybe I am a bad parent.

My 2 boys and I watched Transformers tonight.  It was AWESOME!!  After the show, we engaged in about a 30 minute battle royal, in which Dadatron unfortunately met his demise to Alexhyde and Isaacusprime.

I can hear the gasp from you all that I let my 4 and 8 year olds watch a PG-13 movie.  Well, before tonight, watching this movie would never have been an option.  Jenny usually has to screen even a PG movie 5 or six times before the kids get a pass to view it.  So, for Christmas, we received a super cool DVD player from a company called ClearPlay .

Some friends of ours, The Sansoms, put us on to this player that edited your movies for you!  With a membership comes a jump drive where one can download edited movie files from the ClearPlay website.  Then, when the movie is playing, it automatically skips over swear words, gratuitous sex and violence, and a whole grundle of other filtering options.

It is awesome.

My boys and I were able to sit down and watch a whole bunch of fantastic, "clean" violence and afterwards, we could beat our chests (and each other) into oblivion.

The player cost $50 from Target and the year membership is around $8 bucks each time you update your movie archive.  Currently, there are about 3500 movies.

Even for me and Jenny, the filtering options are great in that we don't have to listen to or see the things that make us cringe and feel uncomfortable.

So, look out Spiderman, Superman, and all the other kids' heroes that Alex and Isaac haven't been able to meet on the big screen, here we come!

What...? Did you say something?

So my hearing may be gone for good.  There is just this constant ringing now...

Tonight, I experienced a special treat.  An old friend, Taylor Orton, is on his way to fame and I thought I would go and see him along his journey.  Taylor belongs to a rockin' band called I Am The Ocean.  They are an extremely heavy rock band that can really get the heads banging and the ear drums exploding.  They were very loud, but after the initial shock of it all, I didn't mind sacrificing my aural abilities in order to hear their music.

Taylor is the drummer who keeps the band rolling and I was amazed at how awesome he is!

Which reminds me of my own dreams of being a rock star...  Oh, and for those of you who don't know, I am well on my way as well.

I received ROCK BAND for Christmas for the XBOX 360 and I've decided this whole Rock Star thing isn't so bad.  I am totally cut out for it.

Alex is my drummer and he is coming along nicely, and with me on the plastic controller guitar, the sky is the limit.  Imagine (sorry no pictures, ever) of Alex playing some nine inch nails on the drums while I am thrashing away on the red, green, blue and yellow keys on my guitar, well, let's just say we are really something.

So Taylor, your band may be rockin',  but Alex and I aren't far behind!

The Best Job...

I am a wedding videographer.

Sure it isn't something that I would have aspired to be when I was young.  I thought back then I would just be a pirate.  Can't help it.  I like booty.

Sorry.

Couldn't help it.

Anyway.

I shot a wedding today with a great photographer and an even better couple.  We had a blast.  Everything went smoothly.  The shooting, the editing, we really had a great time.  Several times throughout the day I thought to myself "I love my job."  There truly isn't any other job I would rather have.

So I arrived home, began editing, and my little Isaac entered the room.  He had drawn me the above picture.  I quickly forgot about my shoot and realized that being a videographer is not the best job on the planet, but that being my two boys' dad is!

Martha

So you know how you have friends that have all kinds of different talents?  Kelly Anne Sampson is my Martha Stewart friend.  Talk about intimidating.

If you are lucky enough to be invited to her house for dinner, here is what to expect:  First, you drive up to this immaculate front yard with amazing flowers and bushes (we're envisioning summer here).  As you walk up to the door you notice a small bench among the greenery along with some wooden, hand-painted little accents.  You take a deep breath and knock.  Kelly David (Kelly Anne's husband, the same first name thing is somewhat confusing at first) answers the door and sweeps you inside.  Yep, it's as bad as you feared.  The house inside is as beautiful as the front yard.  Amazing paintings, darling photos, everything you see down to the smallest detail is totally out of some magazine.  Then you see the kids.  She really has 3 small boys and has a super cute, super clean house?  Self-esteem drops 2 more notches.
So maybe she'll blow it at dinner you think.  That would humanize her.  Better try wishing for something else.  Dinner is phenomenal.  Not only can Kelly follow a recipe; she can improvise, improve and just plain make things up that are delectable.  Dinner is served on cute little matching plates onto a table with a flower centerpiece.  Note this centerpiece is not from Flower Patch (hey, I could do that), but these flowers have been lovingly nurtured in Kelly's yard and cut today for this occasion.  And by the way, the fresh herbs she used to make that delicious meal in front of you, she grew those as well.
After a tasty meal filled with sparkling conversation, Kelly is of course, hilarious, you retire to the ajoining living room.  Now her husband shows you the book she has written and taken all the photos for from her own garden.  Are you serious? you think, she writes too?  Not only this, but she writes very well.  Start reading her blog and you may be hooked permanently; even my husband is.
Intimidated yet?  I thought so.  I wonder if Martha would be...
